Be selfish, sounds just wrong doesn’t it. No one wants to be seen as self centered or selfish. I’m not talking about being a jerk, however it turns out focus on ourselves first can be the most important thing we do for our business and our personal life.
Previously I wrote a post talking about balance. This post is a follow up to that. Although I write most of my blog posts covering sales, marketing, systems, build your business topics, this blog is not directly about that, however what I’m about to share has been one of the single most important things I have done to build my businesses.
I’m talking about taking care of me. In 2013 I wrote a book called The Slimpreneur – How to Lose Weight While You Make Money. I wrote it because so many of my coaching clients told me that after growing their business- losing weight, improving their health and fitness was their second most important goal. An astounding 80% of the clients I was coaching at the time were challenged to carve out the time to focus on themselves.
I think we all can relate. After the publication of the book my business took off. My coaching business grew and I took my eye off the ball. While I followed most of the great advice given in the book, I started to put on weight. Formerly the “Slimpreneur” over the course of the next couple of years I no longer could claim the “Slim” part of that label.
Life got in the way and I got sidetracked as we all do at times. 2015 was a particularly challenging time – I call it my “transition” year. I sold 2 houses, bought another, moved, launched a new product line, wrote a book, started a rehab on a house and persevered through difficult times.
Fast forward to 2016, time to get back on track. I made a commitment in January to focus on my health and fitness. You see the one thing I know is that before I can be the best business builder/coach in the world, I have to be the best me. We as entrepreneurs often put the business before ourselves and sadly at times our family. As a W-2 earner you get to go home at the end of the day, as a small business owner the day doesn’t always end at 5pm. I’m back focused on me first, I’ve lost weight, I work out at least 5 times a week and I’ve made eating healthy and exercise a priority.
So what steps can you take to take better care of yourself? What commitments are you willing to make to put yourself first?
