Goal Setting – It’s That Time of Year

I don’t know about you but every year about this time I take some time to reflect upon the last year, review my goals and set new goals for the upcoming year. I don’t really make New Years Resolutions but I do set goals for the new year.

Make your goals SMART

I think anyone who wants to be successful at something needs goals. If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know if you’ve arrived? Successful entrepreneurs know there are goals and then there are effective goals. Goals should be SMART; Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. As I reviewed my goals from last year I found that I accomplished most of them, some I even hit out of the park. A few of the ones that I didn’t quite succeed on have been re-evaluated, re-formulated and added to this years goals. Some were abandoned as no longer relevant.

Building your list

For my business in 2017 I have one over-reaching main goal – to build my list. As I think back on the hundreds of coaching calls I’ve done with clients in 2016, I have come to realize that although we all know the importance of marketing, sometimes we don’t have a laser focus on the point of it all. Building our list. Without getting names and email addresses, why bother? Of course the next vital step is follow-up, but I’ll save that topic for another blog post.

For myself and my clients the question I’ll be asking is “Is the activity your doing right now getting you new leads?” If the answer is “no”, then change what your doing. During one of my calls today I asked a client about a speaking engagement she just booked. I asked what her what the call to action was, what did she want them to do? She didn’t have a clue. My challenge to her was to offer something that would get every person in the room to give her their name and email address to get some fantastic free thing.

Almost everything we do when we market should be for the single purpose of building your list. Sales will come with follow up.

I’ve set a goal for myself to add 1000 qualified names to my list this year. What’s your goal for building your list this year?
